Chennai – The audio and trailer launch of the upcoming Tamil film “EMI (Matha Thavanai)” witnessed a gathering of prominent figures from the industry, who shared their insights on the movie’s theme and the current state of cinema. The film, directed by Sadhasivam Chinnaraj, who also stars as the lead, delves into the lives of ordinary people grappling with the pressures of Equated Monthly Installments (EMIs).
Veteran director Bhagyaraj, known for his relatable storytelling, set the tone for the event by reminiscing about his own early days. “For my first film, I actually had a very mundane story,” he revealed, adding that it was after working as an assistant director that he realized the power of drawing narratives from real-life experiences. “If we take stories from our own lives, the film will be a success,” Bhagyaraj asserted.

Lead actress Roopa Koduvayur is expected to play a crucial role in portraying the emotional toll that EMIs can take. The press release suggests the film is a comedy-sentiment mix, aiming to resonate with a wide audience, particularly the middle and lower-middle classes who often rely on EMIs for various purchases.
Producer Mallaiyan, speaking at the event, highlighted the film’s intention to shed light on the darker side of EMIs. “Many people, unable to bear the burden of EMIs, have even attempted suicide,” he stated. “This ‘EMI’ film tells their story. It also talks about how EMIs should be used responsibly. We request everyone’s support.”

Director R.V. Udhayakumar expressed concerns about the current health of Tamil cinema, lamenting the lack of support for good content. He praised the EMI team, noting that even small films with strong stories can succeed, citing examples like Rubber Band and Kudumbasthan. Director Perarasu made a strong statement, equating the addiction to EMIs with the problem of alcohol consumption in society, calling for both to be eradicated.
Director Sadhasivam Chinnaraj, who also penned the story, screenplay, and dialogues, explained his inspiration for the film. “I have seen the EMI torture firsthand in a friend’s life,” he shared. “That’s when I decided to make a film about how it affects everyone.” He initially approached Perarasu with the idea, who has been supportive throughout the project. Chinnaraj also revealed that he stepped in to play the lead role due to budget constraints and the unavailability of other actors for a small-budget film.

With music by Srinath Pichai and lyrics by Perarasu and Vivek, “EMI (Matha Thavanai)” is slated for an April release. The film also features Perarasu, Black Pandi, Sun TV Adhavan, and others in supporting roles. The launch event suggests that the film aims to connect with the everyday struggles of a large section of the population, using humor and sentiment to deliver its message about the responsible use of EMIs.
