The upcoming Tamil film Good Day is a cinematic exploration rooted in the real-life experiences of lyricist Karthik Netha, who stated that the film reflects his own 20-year struggle with alcoholism and the societal pressures that fuel addiction.
Speaking about the project, Karthik, who also contributed additional dialogue, provided a candid look into the film’s origins. “This is a story from my past,” he said. He attributed addiction to systemic issues, stating, “The social structure is a reason for one to become an alcoholic. Severe economic disparities… the disappointment that comes when the money doesn’t come pushes a man into addiction. I was one of those who fell.” He clarified that the film does not glorify drinking but instead “assertively states that it is wrong, while also saying that he is not the only reason he started drinking; there are many others.”
This perspective was echoed by director Raju Murugan, who also spoke about the film. “This film is not to glorify the life of an alcoholic. It is a film that asks what the social, psychological, and economic roots behind drinking are,” Raju remarked. “I had a similar experience, which is why I understand its weight. This film gave me the feeling of having read a short story by Nagarajan or having visited the world of Vaikom Basheer.”

The film’s narrative follows a garment factory worker in Tiruppur, played by producer-actor Prithiviraj Ramalingam, over the course of a single night. Prithiviraj revealed that the project began from a place of personal and financial uncertainty. “When a film I was supposed to do was suddenly cancelled, I had only ₹1000 in my hand,” he recalled. “This film was born out of the trust of friends… The idea for this story came from the truth about my friend, poet Karthik Netha’s life, his alcoholism, and his state of mind.”
Technically, the film employs a distinct visual style. Screenwriter Poorna J.S. Michael explained, “We have tried something new in this film. We have tried to tell the entire film without inter-cuts. The camera will follow a character. This will be a new experience for the audience.”

Good Day is directed by debutant N. Aravindan and features music by Govind Vasantha. The film is being released by Dream Warrior Pictures. Gugan, representing the distributor, noted that the story examines how the pressures of a city like Tiruppur can affect an individual. “This film subtly talks about the social pressures that induce suicidal thoughts,” he said.
The film, which also stars Kaali Venkat and Myna Nandini, is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 27.
