The upcoming Tamil film Thadai Athai Udai is the directorial debut of Arivazhagan Murugesan, a Germany-based electrical engineer, and is based on the true story of a man who was a bonded laborer for 50 years in the Pattukottai region before 1990.

Speaking at an event for the film, Arivazhagan, who also produced the project under his Kanthimathi Pictures banner, reflected on the immense difficulty of the filmmaking process. “My father was on set and said, ‘Making a film is harder than farming’,” he recounted. He also revealed that he wrote the film’s lyrics himself to manage costs, a testament to the personal investment in the project.

The narrative unfolds across two distinct timelines. It follows the historical struggle of the bonded laborer who fought to educate his family, while also exploring a contemporary storyline about how social media and politics influence modern society. The director noted that this dual-timeline structure required a long production schedule of two and a half years to accommodate actor transformations.

The film stars Mahesh, known for his role in Angadi Theru, alongside Guna Babu. Guna Babu mentioned that he was cast after the director saw his performance in K.D. Engira Karuppudurai.

Director A.J. Balakrishnan, who was a guest, commented on the challenges facing smaller films, stating, “In the ’80s, all Tamilians watched movies. Today, only 30 percent of people watch movies.”

Thadai Athai Udai is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 31.
