Director Cheran has revealed that his acclaimed 2004 film Autograph has been re-edited, trimming its runtime by 15 minutes, and its sound has been remixed in Dolby Atmos for its upcoming theatrical re-release on November 14. The director stated that he spent 50 lakh rupees on the technical upgrades to make the film more accessible to a new generation of audiences.
Speaking at a reunion event for the film’s cast and crew, Cheran explained his motivation for the re-release. “I am not going to achieve anything by re-releasing this film now,” he said. “The current generation is different. This film might give them a different idea. We can only sow the seeds. We are re-releasing it because this film is worthy of that.” He emphasized that his goal was to create a fresh viewing experience, stating, “I am firm in not wanting to cheat the audience in any way.”
The event also brought to light new details about the film’s original casting process. Director Pandiraj, who was an assistant to Cheran at the time, confirmed that several prominent actors were approached for the lead role before Cheran himself decided to play it. “This story went to actor Vijay. Then it went to actor Prabhu Deva. Then there were talks with Arvind Swamy. There were also talks with actor Srikanth,” Pandiraj revealed. “Cheran never wanted to act in Autograph. The story of Autograph is what pulled him in as an actor.”

Actress Sneha, who played a key role in the film, reflected on its enduring impact and her long-standing friendship with the director. “After watching this film, many people asked me if a man and a woman can be friends. We have proved it,” she said, noting that their friendship has lasted for 21 years. “If someone asks me which is my favorite film I’ve acted in, I will definitely say Autograph.”
Director Ameer, who was a guest, drew a parallel between Autograph and the 2015 Malayalam film Premam, suggesting that Cheran’s film was a precursor in its narrative style.

The original film won three National Film Awards, including for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
