Director Karthik Subbaraj is collaborating with Sikhya Entertainment, the Oscar-winning production house behind The Elephant Whisperers, for his tenth feature film. The as-yet-untitled project officially began production with a pooja ceremony in Madurai.
The partnership marks the first time the acclaimed Tamil filmmaker has worked with Sikhya Entertainment, which is headed by producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain.
In a statement, Guneet Monga Kapoor described the collaboration as a “natural extension” of her company’s mission. “Partnering with Karthik feels like a natural extension of that mission. Karthik’s cinema is rooted, inventive and wildly original, yet universal in emotion,” she said.
Karthik Subbaraj, whose filmography includes Pizza, Jigarthanda, and Petta, shared his enthusiasm for the project. “I’ve always admired the kind of cinema Sikhya stands for; it truly aligns with the artistic vision I crave to always execute,” he stated. “This story we’re creating is something very close to my heart, and I’m glad to have found the right producers for the same.”
Sikhya Entertainment has produced a number of critically recognized films, including The Lunchbox, Masaan, and the recent National Award-winning Kathal. Their 2022 documentary short, The Elephant Whisperers, won the Academy Award, a first for an Indian production.
Achin Jain, also a producer at Sikhya, noted Karthik’s unique position in the industry. “Karthik brings a rare balance of craft and instinct; he’s cult and commercial at the same time,” he remarked.
Further details about the film, including its title and cast, have not yet been announced.
