Actor Atharvaa Murali is set to take on a dual role for the first time in his career with Valai, a revenge thriller directed by Jeeva Shankar and set against the coastal backdrop of Rameswaram. The film’s recently released teaser has generated considerable buzz, offering a first glimpse of two distinct characters brought to life by the same actor in what promises to be a departure from familiar revenge-thriller territory.

Jeeva Shankar, whose earlier credits include Naan and Amara Kaaviyam, is directing the project and handling cinematography duties himself. Speaking about the film, he said, “Valai revolves around two characters, Sarah and Kutty, both played by Atharvaa Murali. This doesn’t totally delve into the native lifestyle of the fisherman community, but instead is a tale of revenge.”

On what distinguishes Valai from other revenge-driven narratives in Tamil cinema, the director was emphatic. “The reason itself is unique. We have tried conveying that revenge is the solution or cure to any issues, even when it’s retaliation to injustice caused by venomous people,” Jeeva Shankar said. “We haven’t tried preaching this as a message, but have crafted a screenplay that will be entertaining and will impress audiences.”

The film brings together a substantial ensemble cast. Rupa Manjari and Vani Bhojan play the female leads, with Murali Sharma, Aadukalam Narain, Arjai, Jayaprakash, Mayilsamy and Imman Annachi among the supporting players. Music director Ghibran has composed four songs for the film, with sequences shot across the Andaman Islands, Chennai and Rameswaram.

For Atharvaa, Valai arrives during a particularly productive phase of his career. The actor earned praise for his performance in DNA, an action thriller about newborn theft that drew strong audience reception upon its theatrical and OTT release. He followed that with a notable turn in Parasakthi, the Sudha Kongara-directed period drama alongside Sivakarthikeyan that released during Pongal 2026. Taking on a dual role represents a new challenge, and the teaser suggests he has committed fully to making both characters distinct.

Shooting for Valai has been completed, with post-production nearing its end. “Although there have been many movies shot in the backdrops of Rameswaram, this will be a different and refreshing experience in theaters,” Jeeva Shankar said. The film is produced by Pepsi V.S. Balamurali under the Raadhu Infotainment banner. An official announcement regarding the trailer, audio launch and worldwide theatrical release date is expected soon.
