Oh Butterfly arrived for Nivedhithaa Sathish at what she describes as a low point. After dedicating close to a year to Dhanush’s Captain Miller, she found herself questioning her career. Then debutant director Vijay Ranganathan narrated this script, and something shifted. “I found it compelling,” she said. “When I had to undergo surgery just as production began, the team waited for me. That meant a lot.”
The film is a psychological romantic thriller that follows a couple on their honeymoon at a hill station. The wife, Gouri, played by Nivedhithaa, doesn’t seem happy about either the trip or the marriage. What begins as romantic unease unravels into something darker, probing honesty, fear, and mental health within relationships.
Vijay Ranganathan spent eight years in the industry before making his feature debut with Oh Butterfly. He wrote the story long before it reached production, reworking it extensively. When he pitched the film, most doors stayed shut. “It didn’t fit existing cinematic patterns,” he said. The producers who eventually came aboard were friends who believed in the material.
One of the film’s boldest choices was shooting entirely in sync sound, still uncommon in Tamil cinema. Ranganathan wanted authenticity in the dialogue, which also led to casting Nivedhithaa specifically because she’s a native Tamil speaker. “From the beginning, we knew we needed someone who could deliver lines naturally,” he said.
Ciby Chandran, who plays the husband, reflected on what the film explores beneath its genre surface. “Relationships inherently contain elements of suspense and emotional tension,” he said. “This film takes that and turns it into an actual thriller. It touches on things people deal with today: honesty, fear, mental health.” After years of seeking the right opportunity, he said being part of Oh Butterfly felt meaningful.
Attul, in a supporting role, praised Nivedhithaa’s performance and called sharing screen space with Nassar an honour. He described feeling a strong sense of responsibility after reading the script and credited the technical team as the film’s biggest strength.
Producer Anand S Shah recalled being taken aback during the first narration. “I’d never encountered anything like it,” he said. He was impressed that Ranganathan chose to invest resources directly into production quality. Venkky, who heard the story four years ago, highlighted the director’s meticulous approach, from scouting 35 houses to finalize one shooting location.
Music composer Vaisagh Somanath said the collaboration worked smoothly because both he and the director had creative clarity from the start. The film also features cinematography by Vedharaman Sankaran and editing by Bhuvanesh Manivannan.
Oh Butterfly releases in cinemas on March 6.
