Vowels takes a structurally playful approach to the love genre. The Tamil anthology, arriving in theatres on March 13, splits its narrative into five segments, each named after a vowel and built around a distinct emotional register: A for Attraction, E for Emotion, I for Intimacy, O for Obsession, and U for Unconditional. Each segment is helmed by a different debut director, making it both a love anthology and a launchpad for five new filmmakers.

The five directors are Dhilip Kumar, Sangeeth Nath, Santhosh Ravi, Hemanth, and Jagan Rajendran. They worked alongside veteran actors Yugi Sethu and Chinni Jayanth, who both feature in the film. Chinni Jayanth, 42 years into his career, hinted at something unusual in his role without giving details. “I do not want to break the suspense,” he said. “More than me, Yugi Sethu being part of this film is a big USP.”

Yugi Sethu was characteristically candid, singling out actor Peter for particular praise. “Mark my words, he will soon be acclaimed as one of the best comedy actors in the Tamil film industry,” Sethu said. He also drew attention to the film’s format, noting the global shift toward 90-minute runtimes while Indian films continue to run two and a half hours.

Director Dhilip Kumar traced a fun lineage for Chinni Jayanth’s role: “In 1991, he played Murali sir’s friend in Idhayam. In 1999, he was Kunal’s friend in Kadhalar Dhinam. Now in 2026, he plays the hero’s friend in Vowels.” He compared the on-screen dynamic between Yugi Sethu and Peter to Robin Williams and Jim Carrey sharing the screen.

Sangeeth Nath, who handled the Attraction segment, spoke about the learning curve of working with the veterans. “Although we approached them for our film, we kept learning so much from them,” he said. Santhosh Ravi, a Telugu-speaking director making his Tamil debut, credited Chinni Jayanth’s guidance for helping him navigate the emotional portions, and praised actors Deepak and Samyuktha Vishwanath for their work.

The ensemble cast includes Raj Ayyappa, Nandu, Deepak Paramesh, Kajal Choudhary, and Peter. Raj Ayyappa recalled that shooting began in Coorg on his birthday. “The memories of working on Vowels will always remain special,” he said. Music director Saravanan composed seven songs for the film, working with lyricists Prakash, Madhan, and Madurai Kavi.
