Anurag Kashyap’s first Tamil production Bad Girl, directed by Varsha Bharath, has been selected for the prestigious Tiger Competition at the Rotterdam Film Festival. The psychological drama, produced in collaboration with filmmaker Vetrimaaran’s Grassroot Film Company, marks several firsts for Tamil cinema.

“When I watched the first half of the film, I knew this was special,” says Kashyap. “It’s a unique perspective that helps men understand how the world appears to women. Only Varsha could have directed this story this way.”

The film stars Anjali Sivaraman in the lead role, alongside veteran actress Shanthi Priya making her comeback. “The story deeply resonates with various aspects of women’s lives,” says Priya. “It explores complex relationships between parents and children.”

Director Varsha Bharath, who previously assisted Vetrimaaran, approaches the subject from a distinct angle. “In Tamil cinema, women have often been portrayed as mothers or goddesses. Bad Girl attempts to explore their genuine thoughts and emotions, presenting women as human beings rather than saints,” she explains.

The film also marks composer Amit Trivedi’s Tamil debut. “Anurag personally brought Amit on board for the music,” says Vetrimaaran, who initially developed the project. “The film’s selection in Rotterdam’s main competition section is particularly significant, as it’s directed by a female filmmaker.”

Lead actress Sivaraman notes the authenticity of her character: “The role of Ramya seemed to mirror aspects of my own personality. Initially, I was hesitant about carrying an entire film, but the faith Vetrimaaran sir and Varsha showed in me helped bring the character to life.”

The film’s teaser launch event at Sathyam Cinema, Chennai, was attended by special guests including filmmaker Mysskin and actress Taapsee Pannu. The psychological drama is currently in post-production.
