Director Suresh Krissna has revealed that it was actor Rajinikanth who insisted that the successful stage play Charukesi be adapted into a feature film. The film, which has been adapted from the play, features veteran actor Y.G. Mahendra in the lead role at the age of 75.
In a video message shared during a recent gathering, co-star Sathyaraj expressed high praise for the central performance, stating, “I’m confident Y.G. Mahendra will win a National Award for his performance in this film.” Sathyaraj also commended the powerful dialogues written by Pa. Vijay and noted the strength of the film’s narrative in the context of other recent story-driven successes.

This sentiment was shared by other members of the ensemble cast. Suhasini remarked on the quality of the script, stating, “After a long time, I’ve come across a film with such strong dialogues.” Samuthirakani shared that watching the original play inspired a “sense of responsibility” in him, while Ramya Pandian expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and noted that being directed by Suresh, known for films like Baashha, was a “lifetime honour.”
The production also involves three generations of Y.G. Mahendra’s family, with his daughter Madhuvanthi Arun and his grandson Ritwik also part of the cast. Madhuvanthi described the film’s journey from stage to screen as an “emotional moment.” Music composer Deva noted that he had worked with Y.G. Mahendra for 45 years and that both he and Suhasini have “lived their characters” in the film.

Y.G. Mahendra himself described the opportunity as a “blessing.” He noted, “After a long time, we have a Tamil film without violence and bloodshed. When people walk out of the theatre after watching Charukesi, they’ll feel truly fulfilled.” He also extended his thanks to Rajinikanth, whom he referred to as a long-time mentor.
The film’s cast also includes Thalaivasal Vijay, Livingston, and Jayaprakash. Video messages of support were also shared by actors Mohanlal and Shankar Mahadevan, who has sung a song in the film.
