Director S. Ezhil has revealed that his upcoming film, Desingu Raja 2, is not a sequel to his 2013 film of the same name but an entirely new story inspired by the Hollywood series Police Academy. The title, he explained, was used for its brand recognition at the suggestion of the producer. The film, which stars Vimal, is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11.
The plot of Desingu Raja 2 centers on three agriculture students who discover a method to make barren land fertile and face conflicts when they attempt to implement their findings. This confirmation of a new storyline aligns with comments from actor Ravi Mariya, who noted, “There is no connection between this film and the first part of Desingu Raja. If the first part was a comedy commotion, this second part can be called a comedy chaos.”

The film also marks a significant reunion between Ezhil and music composer Vidyasagar, who are collaborating after a 23-year gap since their work on Poovellam Un Vasam. Reflecting on this, Ezhil stated, “Though I worked with him on Poovellam Un Vasam, I didn’t fully grasp his genius then. Now, I am in awe.” Vidyasagar humorously added, “It took 25 years for Ezhil to recover from the impact of that film’s songs. He has come back from that to give us this film.”
The project coincides with Ezhil’s completion of 25 years in the film industry, a milestone that drew praise from his peers. Director R.V. Udhayakumar compared Vimal’s on-screen presence to that of a young Vijayakanth, stating, “After Vijayakanth, the person I see now who speaks innocently is actor Vimal.”
Vimal noted that the film was a welcome change of pace after a series of more serious roles. “After acting so seriously, coming to this film’s set was so relaxing and fun,” he said. The film also features a large ensemble of comedy actors, including Singampuli, Robo Shankar, and Soori, and introduces Jana, the son of producer P. Ravichandran, in a key role.
Looking ahead, Ezhil mentioned plans for a horror-comedy utilizing AI technology and a pan-India script he had previously developed.
