A film that questions traditional gender roles and family structures is set to release in theaters on March 7. Gentlewoman, directed by Joshua Sethuraman and featuring Lijomol Jose, Hari Krishnan, and Losliya Mariyanesan, was unveiled at a trailer and music launch event attended by cast, crew, and media.
“This film stems from my love for cinema,” said director Joshua Sethuraman. “The title itself is meant to break stereotypes. We’ve only heard of ‘gentlemen’ until now, so I wanted to change that with ‘gentlewoman.'” He added that approximately 20 minutes of the film will progress with just music, highlighting composer Govind Vasantha’s contribution as a major strength of the production.

The film was completed in 19 days, a feat that surprised many, including lyricist and dialogue writer Yugabharathi. “When Joshua said he could finish the film in 19 days, I didn’t believe it. But when one talented artist after another joined and believed in him, it happened,” Yugabharathi said.
Lijomol Jose, who plays a lead role, expressed confidence in the film’s potential impact: “Just like its title, this film will change many people’s perspectives. I’m thankful to Joshua for selecting me for this character.”
Hari Krishnan, who was brought on board just three days before shooting began, shared his initial apprehension about the role. “When Joshua told me the story, I was afraid of how I would portray this character. His stories are always a bit frightening. Stories like this definitely need to be discussed on screen.”
Losliya Mariyanesan expressed gratitude for the opportunity: “I’ve tried to portray this character as the director envisioned it. It was an honor to act alongside Lijomol, whose performance amazed me.”

The production team revealed that they faced some challenges with the censor board. Director Raju Murugan, who attended the event, mentioned providing advice to Joshua during the certification process. “The main problem in our society is that we sanctify everything,” Murugan said. “Treating women as goddesses rather than fellow humans is the most dangerous societal mindset. Gentlewoman is about seeing women as fellow humans and speaking to them in their language.”
Director T.C. Gnanavel praised the film’s concept: “Breaking stereotypes is very important in society. As artists, breaking stereotypes is crucial. All changes have come through breaking stereotypes, so we should welcome all creative efforts in today’s society that attempt this.”
Producer Hari Bhaskaran described his experience: “When I heard the story, I found it extremely interesting. The director shot it exactly as he described, without cutting any expenses.” Co-producer Leo added that the story contained powerful social commentary that needed to be shared.

Cinematographer Sa Kathavarayan, editor Elayaraja Sekar, and art director Amaran all praised the collaborative effort that went into making the film. Amaran specifically noted, “Joshua is a big surprise to me. Many assistant directors have pitched stories to me, but I know how difficult it is to make them happen. He made it possible despite all the challenges.”
Produced by Komala Hari Pictures and One Drop Ocean Pictures, Gentlewoman will be distributed by Uthraa Productions and is scheduled for worldwide release on March 7, 2025.
