Happy Raj looks like GV Prakash Kumar’s answer to a question he’s been asked for years: can he recapture the freewheeling energy of Trisha Illana Nayanthara without alienating a family audience? By his own account, the answer is yes. “Trisha Illana Nayanthara had a certain energy, though it catered to a specific audience,” he said. “With Happy Raj, we’ve retained that energy while making it accessible to everyone.”
The film, directed by debutant Maria Raja Elanchezhian, is a family entertainer releasing on March 27. Maria is a former associate of Pradeep Ranganathan, the director behind Love Today, and spent five years working under him. “Those five years shaped me significantly,” Maria said, adding that Pradeep made a cameo appearance in the film’s promo despite his busy schedule.

Sri Gouri Priya plays the female lead opposite GV Prakash. She’s been selective since her breakout role in Lover and said this project felt right from the start. “GV Prakash sir and I were reserved at first, but we quickly developed a great rapport,” she said. The cast also includes Abbas, George Maryan in a role the team expects to resonate strongly, Prarthana Nathan, Adhirchi Arun, and Madurai Muthu.
Vijay Sethupathi, who attended the pre-release event, zeroed in on GV Prakash’s generosity as a composer willing to let another music director score his film. “Despite being a composer himself, his willingness to collaborate with another music director speaks volumes,” Sethupathi said. Justin Prabhakaran handles the music, and the track Aadine Iruppen has already gone viral across social media.

Gaana Vinoth, who wrote and performed Aadine Iruppen, described the song’s unusual process. “It was crafted based on the lip-sync of the visuals, blending Tamil and Hindi in a colloquial style to reflect the characters,” he said. The song was among the first opportunities he landed after exiting Bigg Boss, thanks to GV Prakash.
Kavin, who also attended the event, said the film reminded him of Love Today’s energy. “Even without knowing much about the film, I sense a Love Today-like connect,” he said. “Casting is crucial, and this film has a strong ensemble.”

The film is produced by Jaivarda under Beyond Pictures, with Jaikanth Suresh as co-producer. Both are first-time producers, and GV Prakash acknowledged their commitment. “I was cautious about working with first-time producers, but Beyond Pictures completed the film ahead of schedule,” he said. “The film has already secured its theatrical, OTT, and satellite deals, placing it in a profitable zone before release.”

The pre-release event also saw the newly elected Tamil Film Producers’ Council members honouring the Beyond Pictures team. Council president GKM Tamil Kumaran said the film reflected the youthful energy of its producers and predicted success. “Today, there is no distinction between big and small films. Audiences celebrate good cinema,” he said.

With cinematography by Madhan Christopher and editing by Selva R.K., Happy Raj releases in theaters on March 27.
