Chennai, India – A biopic on the life and career of illustrious Indian composer Ilaiyaraaja was officially launched today at an event held in Chennai. The film, simply titled “Ilaiyaraaja,” will feature actor Dhanush in the lead role, as revealed by the retro-style poster unveiled by Kamal Haasan.

“This is truly a moment of fulfillment for me,” Dhanush shared, visibly moved by the occasion. “Since my childhood, I have been captivated by the melodies of Maestro Ilaiyaraaja Sir. It is often said that our thoughts shape our reality. Life is full of manifestations, and when we devote ourselves to our desires, they do come true.”

The project, a collaborative effort between Connekkt Media, PK Prime Production, and Mercuri Movies, boasts an impressive creative team. Arun Matheswaran, known for his work on Captain Miller and Rocky, will direct the film, with cinematography by Nirav Shah and production design by Muthuraj.

Ilaiyaraaja himself graced the launch event, alongside prominent film figures such as directors Vetrimaaran and Thiagarajan Kumararaja. Dhanush elaborated on the influence of Ilaiyaraaja’s music on his own acting career, stating, “While many find solace in his songs for a peaceful slumber, I would spend my nights immersed in dreams of one day portraying his extraordinary life on the silver screen. Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja has been and will forever remain my guiding light.”

Kamal Haasan, who shares a long-standing artistic relationship with Ilaiyaraaja, offered his wishes to the team. “A film depicting the life of this icon could have over 8 interpretations, given the diverse experiences and influences upon many individuals,” he said, acknowledging the weight of responsibility on director Arun Matheswaran and encouraging him to “relish and present his unique perspective on the Bharat Ratna Recipient ‘Maestro Ilaiyaraaja’.”

The event marked a moment in cinema, with the unveiling of the retro poster and handwritten musical notes by Ilaiyaraaja, presented by Kamal Haasan.
