Fifty families across Tamil Nadu now have homes of their own, courtesy of the Joyalukkas Foundation’s Joy Homes program. The keys were handed over by actor Prashanth at Valluvar Kottam in Chennai, with Joyalukkas Group Chairman Joy Alukkas presiding over the ceremony.

There is a well-worn Tamil saying about life’s two great tests: get married and build a house. Prashanth referenced it with a smile. “Joy Alukkas already helps people with the first one,” he said, nodding to the jewellery brand’s role in Indian weddings. “Now they’ve taken on the second. These 50 families can say with pride: I have a home of my own.”

Each Joy Homes unit spans about 500 square feet, is built at a cost of approximately 7.5 lakh rupees, and is designed for families who have struggled to secure permanent shelter. The beneficiaries include people affected by poverty, natural disasters, chronic illness, and disability. The homes are given entirely free of cost.

With this latest batch in Tamil Nadu, the Joy Homes program has now crossed 600 homes across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Another 50 are nearing completion in Telangana, and construction has begun on 50 more in Andhra Pradesh, expanding the program across all five southern states.

Prashanth went beyond the usual pleasantries in his praise. “They seek out people in need, whether it’s cancer treatment or other crises, and help them quietly without expecting anything in return,” he said. “Joy Alukkas is a man who built an empire from scratch and still remains humble. That’s not a small thing.” He predicted the foundation’s work would extend across India within five years.

The Joyalukkas Foundation, established in 2009, runs initiatives spanning healthcare, education, elderly care, and women’s empowerment. In Kerala, it operates dialysis centres, donates medical equipment, and runs a senior citizen care facility in Thrissur. During the Covid-19 pandemic, its Joy of Hope program supported the education of children who lost parents. The foundation also runs vocational training in tailoring and beauty care to help women build financial independence.

The ceremony was attended by director-actor Thyagarajan, actress Devayani, Mime Gopi, producers’ council secretary Kathiresan, director Charan, and several other film industry personalities. Joy Alukkas has maintained a presence in Chennai for 18 years, and the Joy Homes initiative is part of its broader commitment to addressing structural gaps in underserved communities.
