The first look of Kenatha Kanom arrived on February 19 carrying a weight that goes beyond the usual promotional cycle. This is the final film from director Suresh Sangaiah, who passed away recently, leaving behind a small but distinctive body of work. Best known for Oru Kidayin Karunai Manu, a film that turned a father’s journey with a goat into something genuinely moving, Sangaiah had a rare ability to find comedy and pathos in rural Tamil Nadu without caricaturing either.

Kenatha Kanom stars Yogi Babu in the lead, continuing his evolution from scene-stealing comedian to credible protagonist. The first look, released by actor Arya, is a striking image: Yogi Babu stands at the centre of a crowd of villagers, hands folded above his head, his expression caught somewhere between earnestness and desperation. Confetti and banana leaves fly around them. It looks less like a comedy setup and more like a moment of collective prayer or chaos, which is exactly the territory Sangaiah worked best in.

The film is a Jio Hotstar presentation, produced by R. Ramesh Babu and Jegan Baskaran. The supporting cast includes Lovelyn Chandrasekhar, Mottai Rajendiran, George Mariyam, and Ramakrishnan. Nivas K Prasanna handles the music, with V. Thiyagarajan on cinematography and R. Ramar editing.

Sangaiah’s films shared a common thread: grounded settings, situational humour that grew from character rather than punchlines, and an affection for ordinary people navigating absurd circumstances. Sathya Sodhanai, his second film, worked similar ground. The earthy palette and rustic design of the Kenatha Kanom first look suggest he was staying in that lane. There’s also a dinosaur skull tucked into the title logo, which, for a village-set Yogi Babu film, is the kind of unexpected detail that makes you curious about what Sangaiah had planned. No release date has been announced yet.
