Following the recent commercial success of remastered films like Ghilli, the 2000 Vijay and Jyotika-starrer Kushi is set for a 4K re-release on September 26 to mark its 25th anniversary. The film is being distributed by Sakthi Film Factory.
Director S.J. Suryah, who was present at an event marking the occasion, reflected on the experience of seeing the film with a fresh perspective. “After so many years, watching it with you all today felt like the first time,” he said. He also recounted the origin of the song “Kattipudi,” explaining that he asked composer Deva to base it on the tune of “Senthamizh Thenmozhiyal.”

Suryah also discussed the film’s central concept, explaining that he wanted the conflict to stem from the couple’s egos rather than external obstacles. “I wanted the hero and heroine to be their own villains,” he stated. Producer A.M. Ratnam added an anecdote from the original production, revealing that Vijay had requested action scenes, which Suryah resisted until they compromised on a single fight sequence.
The event also became a platform for future speculation, as producer A.M. Ratnam proposed the idea of a sequel. He suggested that S.J. Suryah should direct it and floated the possibility of actor Vijay’s son, Jason Sanjay, in the lead role.

The remastered version of Kushi is set to release in theatres on Sep 26th.
