Maragatha Malai, a Tamil fantasy adventure directed and written entirely by debut filmmaker S. Latha, is set for a summer theatrical release on April 3. The film is among a rare breed in recent Tamil cinema: a family-oriented adventure built around old-world folklore, complete with animated dragons, gorillas and sorcerers, aimed squarely at children and their parents.
Santhosh Prathap, who leads the cast, is candid about why he signed on. “Films like Maragatha Malai that families and children can enjoy have become rare,” he said. “I act in smaller films because I want to support new directors and talent. Someone gave me my first chance too, and I want to be that person for others.”

Prathap, best known for his role in Pa. Ranjith’s Sarpatta Parambarai and his stint on Bigg Boss Tamil Season 5, has built a track record of mixing commercial projects with smaller, independent films. Maragatha Malai falls firmly in the latter category, a passion project driven by a first-time filmmaker working on a modest budget.
That filmmaker, S. Latha, handled the story, screenplay, dialogue, lyrics and direction herself. “This is a fantasy story built around old-world kings and queens, sorcerers and animals,” she said. “I’ve always loved these kinds of stories, and I made this film with that passion.” Most of the shoot took place at Tada Falls, and the film features animated sequences involving tigers, snakes, elephants, a gorilla, and what the team claims is Tamil cinema’s first animated dragon.

Director R.V. Udayakumar, who attended the trailer and music launch in Chennai, acknowledged the broader difficulties facing the industry. “Cinema is going through serious problems right now, but those are issues the unions need to address and resolve,” he said. “If you make good films, audiences will always come.” He praised Latha’s work, noting the quality of the visual effects and the chemistry between the lead pair.

The film also stars Thambi Ramaiya and Jegan in key roles, with child actor Master Sashanth making his screen debut. Deepshika plays the female lead. The music is by L.V. Muthu Ganesh, with cinematography by P.G. Muthaiyah.
Producer Dhananjeyan pointed to a sobering reality facing Tamil filmmakers right now. “Even selling satellite, digital and OTT rights has become difficult,” he said. “Many films are ready but can’t find a release.” He noted that a woman single-handedly producing and directing a film in this environment deserves real support. Maragatha Malai releases in theatres across Tamil Nadu on April 3, timed for the summer holidays.
