MINMINI MOVIE REVIEW

Cast: Praveen Kishore, Gaurav Kaalai, Esther Anil

Director: Halitha Shameem

Minmini is an ambitious coming-of-age drama that follows the intertwined lives of three characters: Pari Mukilan (Gaurav Kaalai), Sabari (Praveen Kishore), and Praveena (Esther Anil). The film, shot over eight years to capture the actors’ growth, is divided into two distinct parts.

The first half takes place in a boarding school in Ooty, where popular athlete Pari and the artistic newcomer Sabari develop a complex rivalry. An unfortunate accident shifts the tone dramatically, leading to the second half set in the Himalayas. Here, we find a depressed Sabari and a recovering Praveena on a journey of self-discovery.

Halitha Shameem’s direction shines in capturing the growth of her young actors and the breathtaking Himalayan landscapes, beautifully shot by cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa. Khatija Rahman’s debut score adds depth to the visuals, though at times it overpowers the narrative.

While the film ambitiously tackles themes of survivor’s guilt and personal growth, it often feels bogged down by philosophical dialogue and a lack of narrative momentum. The character development, particularly in the second half, can feel stagnant, with revelations coming in frustrating installments.

Despite its flaws, Minmini offers a visually striking and emotionally sincere, if somewhat unfocused, exploration of youth, guilt, and self-discovery.
