Director Vetrimaaran has revealed that filmmaker Ram’s upcoming film, Paranthu Po, was inspired by his own son’s antics, a personal motivation that explains the director’s notable shift from his signature intense dramas to a lighthearted, feel-good narrative. The film, which stars Shiva and Anjali, is scheduled for release on July 4.
The surprising collaboration between Ram and actor Shiva was a recurring topic among the industry figures who gathered to discuss the film. Vetrimaaran provided the context, recounting a conversation with Ram: “He said, ‘I will make a film about the mischief my son does. This is it.’ The film Thanga Meengal was for his daughter; this film is for his son.”

This stylistic departure garnered strong endorsements from Ram’s peers. In a particularly emotional address, director Bala made a direct appeal to the audience, “Please, I beg you, touching your feet, take this film to the people. A director like Ram is needed for us and for Tamil Nadu.” Directors Sasi and Vijay also commented on seeing a different, more lighthearted side of Ram in the film.
The film’s theme of parent-child relationships was further explored by other speakers. Kasthuri Raja, father of Dhanush and Selvaraghavan, shared a poignant reflection: “Though my sons have money and fame, when I see them spending time with their children as fathers, I feel envious that I missed out on that.” Dr. Sivaraman noted, “This film will bring about a big change in parents who have children.”

Lead actor Shiva described Ram as a “treasure,” while Anjali explained her role as what a “commercial character would be like in Ram’s style.” The film also marks a milestone for lyricist Madhan Karky, who has written his 1000th song for the project. He expressed a hope that the song would encourage listeners to quit smoking.
Paranthu Po is presented by Jio Hotstar and produced by GKS Production and Seven Seas & Seven Hills Productions. The cast also includes Grace Antony, Anjali, and Master Midhun Ryan.
