SAREERAM MOVIE REVIEW

Cast: Tharshan Priyan, Charmy Vijayalakshmi, J. Manoj, Shakeela, Pudhupettai Suresh, Madhumitha, G.V. Perumal Malaichamy

Director: G.V. Perumal

Rating: 2.8/5

Sareeram opens with a familiar conflict: Priyan (Tharshan Priyan) and Viji (Charmy Vijayalakshmi) are college students in love, but Viji’s wealthy family stands in their way. When her family attempts to kill Priyan, the couple elopes. Here, the film abandons convention for an interesting twist. To preserve their bond and escape their past, they undergo gender reassignment surgery, with Priyan becoming a woman and Viji becoming a man.

Director G.V. Perumal must be credited for the sheer audacity of his concept. It’s a premise rarely, if ever, seen in a love story, and the film attempts to touch upon the pain and struggles faced by transgender individuals. The lead actors, Tharshan Priyan and Charmy Vijayalakshmi, commit to their unusual roles and deliver adequate performances.

A brave idea, however, cannot overcome a deeply flawed and fragmented script. The central plot point of getting such a drastic surgery on a whim strains all credibility. Post-transformation, the film’s execution weakens, because Tharshan’s build doesn’t convince as a woman, nor does Charmy’s as a man. The screenplay wanders aimlessly, never logically exploring the profound consequences of its wild premise.

While technical aspects like Bharathiraja’s music are serviceable, they cannot salvage the core narrative issues. Sareeram is a daring experiment that crumbles under the weight of its own implausibility. It’s a film with a bold concept trapped inside a clumsy, unconvincing story.
