Chennai – The trailer for Test, a Tamil sports drama directed by S. Sashikanth and produced under his YNOT Studios banner, was launched in Chennai ahead of its premiere on Netflix on April 4. The event brought together the cast and creators, including prominent actors R. Madhavan, Siddharth, and Meera Jasmine, offering insights into the film centered around the world of cricket.

Sashikanth, primarily known as a producer through YNOT Studios, shared that directing was his original ambition. “I actually came to cinema to direct,” he revealed at the launch. “But because I didn’t know direction, I started YNOT Studios precisely to learn it.” He explained the casting choice for Test, stating, “Mature actors were needed to understand the characters in this Test film. I too needed many ‘tests’ for this film. That’s why it took this much time for the film to be released.”

The film marks Netflix’s first original Tamil movie release for the year. Monika Shergill, Vice President of Content for Netflix India, highlighted the platform’s interest in the project. “Many talented stories have emerged from Tamil cinema, and Test is one of them,” she stated. “This sports drama also speaks about family and the challenges faced by the main characters. Director Sashikanth has handled it skillfully.” She noted the unique combination of actors, saying, “Talented actors like R. Madhavan, Nayanthara, Siddharth, and Meera Jasmine have all come together for the first time for this film. We are eager for audiences worldwide to watch this movie.”

Siddharth, who plays a cricketer in the film, spoke about the cultural significance of the sport in India and the challenges of portraying it authentically. “In our country, cricket is life,” he commented. “Many people spend hours watching and playing cricket daily, becoming familiar with the game. Therefore, you can’t just get away with merely acting as a cricketer.” He added, “Playing a Test cricketer role is not easy. I took inspiration from many people for this character. If the tension you feel while watching cricket comes through while watching this film, that itself is a success for us.” He expressed a desire to dedicate his performance to cricketer Rahul Dravid.

Madhavan emphasized his approach to the craft over the nature of the role itself. “Whether a character brought to me is good or a villain, my focus is only on how well I can perform it,” he explained. “In that sense, this character was challenging for me. I have given my best.”

Meera Jasmine expressed her pleasure regarding the collaboration and reuniting with a former co-star. “Test working with Netflix is a joy,” she said. “It’s a beautiful film. You should definitely watch it.” Reflecting on her past work with Madhavan in films like Run and Aayutha Ezhuthu, she added, “Maddy and I are one of the most celebrated pairs on screen.” She also conveyed her happiness working with YNOT Studios, director Sashikanth, and Nayanthara.

Test, featuring an ensemble cast in a story blending sports action with personal drama, is set to begin streaming globally on Netflix from April 4, 2025.
