Thadayam, the ZEE5 Tamil original crime thriller, has crossed 100 million streaming minutes within its first week, a pace that outstrips previous Tamil hits on the platform including Vilangu and Ayali. The series, set against a late-1990s rural backdrop along the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border, follows a police officer investigating a string of ritualistic murders where the killer’s only trophy is the sacred marriage symbol of each victim.
Kaushik Narasimman of ZEE5 put the numbers in context. “Usually you need several weeks to gauge a series’ reception, but Thadayam crossed 100 million streaming minutes before it even completed a week,” he said. “No Tamil series on our platform has reached these numbers this quickly.”

The series stars Samuthirakani as SI Adhiyaman, the newly transferred officer who begins to sense a ritualistic pattern behind the chaos. Samuthirakani, who has directed around 3,000 episodes of television in his career alongside his acting work, said the project offered something he rarely experiences. “Every heart seeks fulfilment, and Thadayam brings that deep sense of satisfaction,” he said. “In all my years in television, I’ve rarely received such honest, direct praise for a project. That recognition means a lot.”

Written and directed by Navinkumar Palanivel, Thadayam was completed under an extremely tight production schedule of about 20 days. “I may have been harsh at times because of the deadline pressure,” Navinkumar acknowledged. “But the entire team worked with incredible dedication.” The series also features Sshivada as Inspector Lakshmi, alongside Raj Tirandas, Prem and Kotravai in key roles.
For first-time producer Ajey Krishna of Cocktail Cinemas, the success has been a vindication. “This was my very first attempt as a producer, and for that first attempt to become this kind of success is something I’m deeply grateful for,” he said. His father, veteran television producer Alagan Tamilmani, shared a telling detail about the show’s quality. “Watching Thadayam at home, it didn’t feel like a web series,” he said. “It felt like a feature film. I watched it straight through to the end before I could get up.”

Writer-actress Kotravai, who plays a key role in the series, spoke about what the opportunity meant for her. “Because of my complexion and appearance, I’ve faced many barriers in this industry,” she said. “But this role gave me hope. Navinkumar believed in my acting when others wouldn’t.”

Composer Vipin Baskar noted that the music played a crucial role in several key moments of the series, while cinematographer KK said his first-ever stage appearance being at a success celebration made the achievement feel especially personal. All eight episodes of Thadayam are streaming on ZEE5.
