Director Mari Selvaraj’s fourth film, Vazhai, is set to bring his personal story to audiences. The film, produced by Navvi Studios and presented by Disney+ Hotstar and Farmer’s Master Plan Production, features newcomers and child actors in lead roles.
At the film’s first single release event, Selvaraj spoke about the personal nature of the project. “Vazhai is my life story,” he said. “By the time you finish watching this movie, you will understand me and my politics completely.”
The film stars Nikila Vimal, Kalaiyarasan, and Divya Duraisamy in key roles. Kalaiyarasan commented on the film’s potential impact, stating, “Vazhai will be one of the most important films in Tamil cinema. It was a new world for me, and I learned a lot.”
Music composer Santhosh Narayanan, a frequent collaborator of Selvaraj’s, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. “This movie will be one of the top 5 movies of Tamil cinema,” he said. “I was amazed by Vazhai, just as I was by Pariyerum Perumal.”
The film’s production marks a significant milestone for Selvaraj, as his wife, Divya Mari Selvaraj, makes her debut as a producer. “I am very happy that my wife Divya is the producer of this film,” Selvaraj noted. “When my life story is made into a movie, I think it is very important that her name is associated with it.”
Disney+ Hotstar representative Pradeep Milroy highlighted the platform’s commitment to the project. “What started as a sketch for Hotstar is now coming to theaters,” he explained. “This work tells the story of Vazhai Mari Selvaraj, the hero, and his hardships in life.”
While the release date hasn’t been announced, the film is expected to hit theaters in the coming months, marking a departure from its initial streaming-only plan.
