Pascal Vedamuthu’s directorial debut, Veppam Kulir Mazhai, tackles the sensitive topic of infertility in a small Tamil Nadu village. The film follows Petthaperumal (Dhirav) and Paandi (Ismath Banu), a married couple facing societal pressure to conceive.
The strength of the film lies in its portrayal of the couple’s relationship dynamics. The script effectively captures their interactions as they navigate societal expectations and personal desires. Dhirav delivers a solid performance as Petthaperumal, portraying the internal conflict of a man caught between tradition and his love for his wife. Ismath Banu offers a strong performance as Paandi, highlighting the societal pressures faced by women in such situations.
The film falters slightly in pacing, particularly in the second half. However, it sparks conversation about a seldom explored subject. The supporting cast, including M.S. Bhaskar and Rama, provide depth by showcasing the various perspectives within the community regarding infertility.
Prithvi Rajendran’s cinematography effectively captures the essence of rural life, and Shankar’s music complements the film’s overall tone. While a tighter edit could have improved the flow, Veppam Kulir Mazhai remains a commendable effort from a first-time director.
