Actor Vijay Viswva was recognized at the 78th India Independence Day celebrations in Queens, New York, serving as Grand Marshal for the India Day Parade on August 17, 2024. The event, organized by the Queens India Day Parade Committee under Chairman Koshy O. Thomas, brought together various Indian-American organizations to commemorate the occasion.

Vishwa, known for his roles in films like Kerala Nattilam Pengaludane and Mayaanadhi, expressed his gratitude for the honor. “It’s a privilege to represent Tamil cinema and India on this international platform,” he said. “This recognition goes beyond personal achievement; it’s a celebration of our cultural ties.”

The actor’s participation included leading the parade alongside New York City Mayor Eric Adams and receiving recognition from the New York Police Department’s Desi Society. Vishwa was presented with a commemorative medal and paraded in a car adorned with the American flag.

The event featured traditional Indian music, dance, and cultural performances. Kumararaja Kathirvel, President of the New York Tamil Sangam, noted the significance of Vishwa’s presence: “Having a rising star from Tamil cinema participate in our Independence Day celebrations helps bridge cultural gaps and strengthens our community bonds.”

During his visit, Vishva also attended an award ceremony where he received the “Young Bari” award. The ceremony was attended by several Indian cinema personalities, including actors Soori, Vaibhav, and Aishwarya Rajesh, and director Venkat Prabhu.

Vishwa’s U.S. tour extended beyond the parade, including a visit to former actor and MP Napoleon’s home. Napoleon commented on the evolving recognition of Tamil cinema internationally: “Vijay’s participation in these events reflects the growing global interest in our film industry.”

Vishwa’s international engagement reflects the expanding reach of regional Indian film industries beyond traditional markets.
