Director Hari Mahadevan has revealed that his upcoming film, Yellow, starring Vaibhav Murugesan and Poornima Ravi, originated from a “gorilla-style” filmmaking concept with no initial script. The film, a female-centric commercial drama, is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 21.
Speaking at an event for the film, Hari explained the project’s unconventional beginnings. “I said, ‘Let’s take a camera and travel in the style of gorilla making, and whatever we get is the film’,” he recounted. He credited producer Prashanth Rangasamy for believing in the concept and supporting it even before a full screenplay was developed. “Even after hearing this, he did not reject me. He believed in me completely. Later, I wrote a complete screenplay and showed it to him.”
The film’s journey-based narrative presented its own set of production challenges, as noted by art director Karthik Krishnan. The lead actors also reflected on their personal journeys to the screen. Vaibhav Murugesan, who plays the male lead, shared that his career began as a background artist in the film Pettai. Poornima Ravi, who plays the central female character, stated, “Many people would like to work in a big film; we have created an opportunity for ourselves and worked hard. Everyone in this film worked for the small screen, and now we have come to the big screen.”
The film is being distributed in Tamil Nadu by Uthra Productions. The distributor, speaking at the event, positioned the film as a response to comparisons with another regional cinema, stating, “Forget about saying that there are no Tamil films made like the way Malayalam films are made; watch this film, everyone will like it.”

Yellow also features director Prabhu Solomon in a key role, alongside Delhi Ganesh and Vinothini Vaidyanathan. The music is composed by Anand Kasinath and Cliff Girish.
