ELECTION MOVIE REVIEW

Cast: Vijay Kumar, Preethi Asrani, Richa Joshi, George Maryan, Pavel Navageethan, Dileepan

Director: Thamizh

Election, set against the backdrop of local body elections in Vellore, follows Nadarasan (Vijay Kumar), a reluctant participant in the political arena. Despite his initial aversion to politics, Nadarasan finds himself drawn into the fray after a series of events, including the humiliation of his father, Nalla Sivam (George Maryan), a loyal party worker. As he navigates the complex world of political maneuvering, Nadarasan confronts betrayals, shifting alliances, and the personal toll of ambition.

The film aims to offer a realistic portrayal of grassroots politics, highlighting the power dynamics and the impact of elections on individual lives. While the premise is promising, Election struggles to maintain a consistent level of engagement. The narrative has its moments of insight and sharp dialogues, but it veers off, and lacks the punch for a political thriller.

One of the film‘s strengths is its portrayal of the complexities of local elections, revealing the motivations and machinations of those vying for power. It touches upon themes of caste politics, personal vendettas, and the often-blurred lines between loyalty and opportunism. These themes aren’t really explored enough, so you’re left wanting more.

Vijay Kumar nails the role of the politician who’s dragged into the mess. Pavel Navageethan shines as a powerful political figure, bringing depth and intensity to his role. George Maryan is heartwarming as Nadarasan‘s father, while Preethi Asrani is adequate as his wife, Divya.

Director Thamizh, who’s known for tackling social issues, takes on local politics in Election. The film has its moments, but it’s a bit underwhelming. The screenplay is a bit all over the place and doesn’t really grab the audience’s attention. Inclusion of unnecessary songs further disrupts the flow.
