The upcoming Tamil film Kaayal will challenge conventional cinematic narratives by portraying women as the primary perpetuators of caste-based prejudice within families, according to its debutant director, Dhamayanthi. The story, she revealed, is drawn from incidents in her own life.

“Films often show men as the main perpetrators of caste violence and separatism,” Dhamayanthi stated at a recent gathering for the film. “But in reality, this tendency is often stronger among women, who have played a major role in passing it to future generations. Kaayal is the story of one such woman.”

The film’s central theme was a key factor for its cast. Actress Anumol, who plays a significant role, noted that she committed to the project based on the script alone, even before a producer was attached. “I applaud director Dhamayanthi for daring to show another side of women’s true minds,” she stated.

Lead actor Lingesh also acknowledged the project’s social weight. “Kaayal is a key film in my career and will have a major societal impact,” he remarked, praising the director for adapting her personal experiences for the screen.

The script’s strength was further highlighted by producer Jesu Sundaramaran, who is based in the United States. He revealed that he decided to produce the film after reading the screenplay, without having met the director or cast in person. “A good story will find its place on its own, and this story has found such a place,” he said.

Kaayal, from journalist-turned-filmmaker Dhamayanthi, also stars Gayathrie, Swagatha, and Ramesh Thilak, with music by Justin Kenanya.
