The upcoming Tamil film Veera Thamizhachi is directed by debutant Suresh Bharathi, a former construction worker, and is based on real-life incidents of sexual violence against women in Tamil Nadu. The film, which stars Sushmitha Suresh in a lead action role, was discussed at a recent music and trailer launch in Chennai.
Suresh Bharathi shared details of his personal journey to filmmaking, stating that he began his career as a construction laborer earning 35 rupees a day. “If I have been promoted from a low-level construction worker to a director today, the primary reason is my wife and sons,” he said, crediting his wife for supporting their family during his five-year struggle to make the film. He also noted his prior success in short filmmaking, having directed 18 short films and won 36 awards.

The film is positioned as a female-centric action-drama that addresses social issues. Director Perarasu, who was a guest at the event, connected the film’s themes to contemporary events. “Bravery is not in the body, but in the mind. The woman who bravely filed a complaint about the atrocity committed against her on the Anna University campus is the ‘Veera Thamizhachi’,” he stated.
The film’s lead, Sushmitha Suresh, an aeronautical engineering graduate, spoke about the physical demands of the role. “We have seen action scenes in films, but you only know the difficulty when you act in them,” she said. She also recounted the care taken by the stunt master during a particularly difficult scene, noting, “Whether I was scared or not, he was scared.” Director Suresh Bharathi highlighted this sequence where the actress is hung upside down, a scene he believes is a first for Tamil cinema.

Music composer Jubin, known for his work on films like Draupathi and Rudra Thandavam, has scored the music for the film. Director R.V. Udayakumar praised the project, drawing a parallel between the director’s former profession and his new one. “They always compare every director to a construction artist,” he remarked.
Veera Thamizhachi is produced by Magizhini Kalaikoodam. The cast also includes Sanjeev Venkat, Ilaya, and Vela Ramamoorthy.
