Social drama Maanbumigu Parai, which tackles caste discrimination through the lens of traditional Tamil percussion, has locked a December 12 theatrical release. The announcement was made during an elaborate audio launch event in Chennai, where VCK President and MP Thol. Thirumavalavan commended the filmmakers for their political courage.

Directed by debutant S. Vijay Sukumar and produced by Suba and Suresh Ram under the Siya Productions banner, the film aims to elevate the perception of the Parai drum from a symbol of servitude to one of cultural pride. Addressing the gathering, Thirumavalavan noted that prefixing “Maanbumigu” (Honorable) to the instrument’s name challenges the psychological stigma historically attached to the community associated with the art form. “The title itself is a courageous political act,” Thirumavalavan stated, emphasizing that the film aligns with long-standing social justice movements.

Veteran composer Deva, known as the Thenisai Thendral, provides the score and soundtrack, marking a significant return to his roots. Deva revealed that he utilized live instruments and brought in folk artists from Madurai to capture the authentic, unplugged sound of the ancient drum. “I have created an anthem for the Parai,” Deva said. “It is a privilege to work on a film that glorifies this musical instrument.”

The film marks the acting debut of Leo Sivakumar, son of renowned orator Dindigul I. Leoni. Sivakumar trained with the Sakthi Kalaikkuzhu troupe to master the instrument for the role. Director Sukumar disclosed that the project is envisioned as a two-part saga, with this first installment focusing on the livelihoods of the artists and the second set to explore the technical varieties of the music.

Also starring Gayathri Rema, the film features cinematography by Ra. Kolanji Kumar and editing by C.S. Prem Kumar. The December 12 release coincides with the birthday of Superstar Rajinikanth, a date the filmmakers selected as a tribute to the icon.
