The audio launch of the rural action-entertainer Kombuseevi, starring Sarathkumar and Shanmugapandian, was held in a grand ceremony in Chennai, setting the stage for a worldwide theatrical release on December 19. Directed by Ponram, best known for his string of rural comedies, the film is inspired by real-life incidents from 1996 involving villagers displaced by the construction of the Vaigai Dam.
Produced by Mukesh T. Chelliah under the Star Cinemas banner, Kombuseevi features a soundtrack by Yuvan Shankar Raja. A highlight of the album is a sentimental song performed by both Yuvan and his legendary father, Ilaiyaraaja, marking a rare collaboration. The launch event saw a significant turnout of industry veterans and family members, including DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth and director S.A. Chandrasekhar, emphasizing the deep industry ties of Shanmugapandian’s late father, Captain Vijayakanth.

Speaking at the event, Sarathkumar grew emotional recalling his bond with Vijayakanth, who gave him a crucial career break with Pulan Visaranai. Sarathkumar, who plays a character named Rokkapuli, praised his co-star’s potential. “When I see Shanmugapandian, I see the same fire in his eyes. He will undoubtedly become a major star,” Sarathkumar stated. He advised the young actor to embrace his height, referring to him as the “Amitabh Bachchan of South India,” and urged him to choose scripts that suit his stature.
Director Ponram detailed the film’s premise, which focuses on the resilience of communities who farm on the riverbed when the dam water recedes and struggle to survive when it fills up. “Kombuseevi is a phrase used in villages referring to a sharpened, ready-to-go attitude,” Ponram noted. The film also stars Tharnika, Kaali Venkat, Munishkanth, and George Maryan, with cinematography by Balasubramaniem.
