Self Start Productions has locked a January 23, 2026, theatrical release for its period romantic drama Mayabimbam. Written, directed, and produced by K.J. Surendar, the film is set specifically in the year 2005, aiming to evoke the nostalgia of mid-2000s romance. The narrative is designed to bridge the gap between the 90s generation and today’s youth by focusing on the purity of relationships, friendship, and family values from an era just before the digital explosion.
The project is notable for serving as a launchpad for an entirely new creative team. The cast features newcomers Janaki, Akash, Harikrishnan, Rajesh, and Arunkumar in lead roles. Behind the camera, K.J. Surendar has assembled a debutant technical crew, including composer Nanda, cinematographer A.M. Edwin, and editor Vinoth Kumar. The lyrics have been penned by established writer Viveka alongside Padmavathi.
Prior to the release announcement, the film gained traction within the industry through its promotional activities.
