Kaalidas 2 is arriving with unusual confidence. The sequel to Sri Senthil’s 2019 investigative thriller has already been screened for several directors and actors, and the reactions ahead of its April 10 release have been notably specific in their praise.

Bharath, who returns as Inspector Kaalidas, described the film as something beyond a standard genre piece. “Kaalidas 2 is not an ordinary crime thriller,” he said. “It has emotion, mystery, suspense. It has the power to hold the audience from beginning to end.” The original Kaalidas revived his career after a difficult stretch, and he credited director Sri Senthil for that turnaround. “Good directors are rare. Having him in my life is a blessing.”

Director Pandiraj, who watched the film before attending the event, was direct in his assessment. “I came late because I watched the film first and came straight here with that feeling,” he said. “It’s full of twists. Every scene brings a new surprise.” He singled out Sam CS’s background score as a standout, praise that was echoed by nearly every speaker through the evening.

Pa. Ranjith, who has also seen the finished film, called it an “interesting” crime thriller and highlighted the three female leads. “Sangeeta, Bhavani, and Abarnathi all performed beautifully,” he said. “The story is told with clarity and conviction.” He drew a connection to the broader shift in Tamil cinema, where smaller films with strong content have been finding large audiences, and expressed confidence that Kaalidas 2 would benefit from the same momentum.

The film introduces two notable entries. Actress Sangeeta, known for Poove Unakkaga, returns to Tamil cinema after a long hiatus. She spoke warmly of the experience, praising Bharath as a gracious co-star and noting the gruelling night shoots that ran from 6 PM to 6 AM. And Ajay Karthik, the son of distributor Five Star Senthil, makes his acting debut alongside Bharath. Director Ganesh K. Babu, who watched Ajay’s journey up close, described a remarkable transformation. “When he arrived from New Zealand, he had no idea about cinema,” he said. “By the end of the shoot, he was a completely different person.”

Bhavani Sre, whose recent work in Viduthalai and Hotspot has established her as one of Tamil cinema’s most dependable actors, plays a key role. She revealed that she and Ajay attended the same acting school. The film also features Prakash Raj and Kishore in its cast.

Shanthanu Bhagyaraj was warm about Bharath, calling him a brother. “Fifty-plus films in, he still comes back with the same fire,” he said. “That in itself deserves celebration.” He praised Bhavani Sre for her commitment across roles, noting how she transforms completely once the camera rolls.

Sri Senthil, who wrote and directed both films, spoke about the gap between parts. After the original’s success, bigger opportunities came his way. “But I realised making a good film matters more than making a big film,” he said. “That’s where Kaalidas 2 began.” He described the production as one of the most demanding he has undertaken, with the entire shoot running through the nights.

Five Star Senthil’s leap from distribution to production is itself a story the industry is watching. His distribution slate has included recent hits like Parking, Garudan, and Maharaja. Producer Dhananjayan pointed out a neat connection: the sons of all three Five Star partners are entering cinema, with Harish Kalyan already established, Ajay Karthik arriving now, and a third on the way.

Sam CS, whose work on Vikram Vedha and Kaithi made him one of Tamil cinema’s most in-demand thriller composers, scored the film. “Making an investigative thriller feel fresh is not easy,” he said. “But the story and screenplay are strong.” Kaalidas 2 also features cinematography by Suresh Bala and editing by Bhuvan Srinivasan. It releases April 10.
