TN 2026, the Tamil political comedy releasing on April 10, has already generated more attention than its makers probably planned for. The teaser, which depicts a film star’s entry into politics, drew immediate comparisons to Thalapathy Vijay’s real-life political journey, setting off a minor online controversy. At a press meet styled like a political rally, complete with flags, placards, and a jeep procession, the cast and crew addressed it head-on: this film isn’t targeting anyone.
“We haven’t made this to offend any politician or any party,” said Thambi Ramaiah, who wrote the story and whose son Umapathy Ramaiah directs. “Watch the film first, then judge. Surface-level assumptions based on a teaser don’t tell you what this film actually is.” Thambi Ramaiah, a National Award-winning actor himself, has built the story around politics as a lived experience rather than ideology. “Politics is woven into everyday life. This comes from family experiences, from things I’ve observed. It’s entertainment, not commentary.”

The film stars Natty Natraj in the lead, and by all accounts he’s given it everything. Director Umapathy described Natty as the film’s biggest asset, citing multiple getups and characters that demanded physical and emotional range. Actress Shritha Rao, making her debut alongside Natty, put it vividly: “Watching him switch between characters was like watching water take the shape of whatever vessel you pour it into.”

One of TN 2026’s selling points is its veteran ensemble. M.S. Bhaskar, Ilavarasu, and Thambi Ramaiah act together for the first time, and by their own telling, they’ve leaned into it with none of the ego that can come with decades in the industry. “At our age, we’ve moved past competition and jealousy,” Ilavarasu said. “We’ve worked with an emotional bond in this film.” Bhaskar echoed the sentiment, calling the experience refreshing and praising Umapathy’s skill in managing a large, experienced cast.

The father-son dynamic behind the camera is worth noting. Thambi Ramaiah wrote the story, Umapathy shaped the screenplay and directed. The elder Ramaiah was visibly proud at the press meet, calling his son’s growth as a filmmaker his greatest personal joy. “A father’s happiness is seeing his son get here through hard work, not connections.”

The supporting cast is packed: Chandini Tamizharasan and Yashika Anand join Shritha Rao as the female leads, with Redin Kingsley, Lollu Sabha Maran, Bigg Boss Muthukumaran, Adithya Kathir, Chithra Lakshmanan, Thalaivasal Vijay, Vaiyapuri, Vadivukarasi, and Viji Chandrasekhar in key roles. Sandy appears in a cameo. Music is by Dharbuka Siva, cinematography by P.G. Muthaiah.

TN 2026, subtitled Thanga Natchathiram (Golden Star), is produced by Kannan Ravi and Deepak Ravi under KRG Kannan Ravi Group. It releases in theatres worldwide on April 10.
