Gandhi Krishna, the director behind Chellame and Ananda Thandavam, returns to filmmaking after a long gap with Breakfast, a romantic drama about modern relationships. The film, which releases this month, stars newcomers Raanav and Rosmin alongside Sampath Kumar, Kasturi, and Krithik Mohan. GV Prakash composed the music, and Vairamuthu has written lyrics.

The gap wasn’t for lack of ideas. Gandhi Krishna says he has 13 scripts ready but needed the right producers to back them. Breakfast found its way through when producer Girija Varadaraj came on board. The film carries the tagline Accept the Reality and deals with how love and commitment have changed across generations.

“I’m not giving advice to couples,” Gandhi Krishna said. “But this bitter truth is something we have to accept. You only live once, and living it right is what our culture teaches. We’ve made it as commercial as possible.” He credited writer Sujatha, under whom he trained alongside director Shankar since Indian, for teaching him to observe the world closely. “He’d say, when you go somewhere new, notice what’s different. That’s what makes a real creator.” That habit, he said, helped him write younger characters convincingly.

Raanav, the male lead making his debut, described the story as having the potential to bring separated couples back together. “Divorced couples could even reunite after watching this,” he said. “That’s how strong the core story is.” Rosmin, who debuted in Malayalam before signing on to Breakfast, plays a character named Jaanvi whose internal conflicts she said mirror her own experiences.

The film was shot across Bangalore, Chennai, and Puducherry, with songs filmed in Manali, Kazakhstan, and Malaysia. GV Prakash composed the music during a stretch when he was juggling multiple commitments, including a National Award win. The film releases in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada.
