When newcomer Rosmin signed on to play the female lead in Gandhi Krishna’s Breakfast, the reference points she reached for were not her own. She reached instead for the director’s filmography. Breakfast, which opens in theatres on April 24, is her Tamil debut, and in the interviews she has given ahead of release she has framed her role as sitting in a lineage of Gandhi Krishna heroines rather than as a debut unto itself.

Rosmin calls the role one that moves between emotional and romantic registers.

“In Sellame, Reema Sen played a very strong and promising character,” she said. “And in Anandha Thandavam, Tamannaah portrayed an innocent role while another character brought in a bold, outspoken presence. In all these films, the female characters had a significant space in driving the story. So when I was offered a role in Gandhi Krishna sir’s film, I was truly excited, as I am a huge fan of these films and the way the heroines were portrayed. I felt honoured to be part of a film that continues that legacy.”

The connection is not a reach. Sellame, from 2004, built its back half around Reema Sen’s Vidya and the way her choices shaped a set of entangled friendships. Anandha Thandavam, five years later, let Tamannaah’s character anchor the emotional arc rather than riding on the male lead’s conflicted interior. Gandhi Krishna has been directing features for close to three decades, and his leading women have repeatedly done story work rather than staying in the frame as decoration.

For Rosmin, Breakfast is meant to sit in that space. “I have been given a very promising role in Breakfast, with many emotional moments as well as light, cute romantic portions,” she said. “It was a beautiful experience to explore both these shades. I believe audiences will enjoy these dimensions and connect deeply with the film. I am confident it will leave a lasting impact.”

Rosmin comes to cinema from modelling. Breakfast puts her opposite Raanav, another newcomer, in an ensemble that also features Sampath Kumar, Kasturi, Krithik Mohan, Amitha Ranganath, Bharath and Mime Gopi. The film is produced by Girija Varadaraj with Dinesh Kumar KV as co-producer under Prem Classic Pictures. G.V. Prakash Kumar composes the score, Vairamuthu and Vivek share the lyric credits, MV Panneerselvam is the cinematographer, and Baskar is editing. Guhan is handling distribution across Tamil Nadu. The film’s premise, as the music launch framed it earlier this week, works off the idea that the easy part of a relationship is falling in; the work begins later.

Breakfast releases worldwide in theatres on April 24.
