THE AKAALI MOVIE REVIEW

Cast: Swayam Sidha, Jai Kumar, Nasser, Thalaivasal Vijay, Arjai, Vinodhini, Yamini, Dharani

Director: Mohamed Asif Hameed

Akaali throws viewers into a world of occult practices and mysterious murders, leaving them both curious and disoriented. The film follows Hamzah Rahman (Jayakumar), a police officer recounting a past case involving a series of gruesome deaths linked to a missing woman named Janice. His investigation leads him to a world of satanic rituals, human sacrifices, and a mysterious cult leader known only as Akaali.

The film’s strengths lie in its atmospheric setting and Jayakumar’s impressive performance as the determined investigator. The dimly lit, dilapidated fort where the occult practices unfold creates an eerie backdrop, adding to the unease. Jayakumar effectively portrays Hamzah’s growing obsession with uncovering the truth, his determination fueling his descent into a world of darkness.

However, Akaali’s narrative structure hinders its impact. The film jumps back and forth in time, introducing a multitude of characters and plot threads that often feel disconnected. While the non-linear approach aims to heighten the mystery, it creates confusion and makes it challenging to fully grasp the story’s complexities.

The supporting cast, while featuring notable actors like Swayam Siddha and Nasser, is largely underutilized. Siddha’s portrayal of the investigating officer oscillates between mocking and admiring Hamzah, leaving her character’s motivations unclear. Nasser, as the exorcist Father Halavia, delivers a strong performance in an extended cameo.

Akaali’s attempt to blend elements of crime-thriller, horror, and the supernatural results in a film that is both exciting and frustrating.
