Gladiators first look lands, and Shalini is producing it too

The first look for Gladiators is out, and the credit that changed since May is the one at the bottom. AL Vijay’s documentary on Ajith Kumar’s motor-racing year is now produced by Shalini Ajithkumar under Golden Trophy Film Production. When the film was announced on Ajith’s 55th birthday, the production credit read Ajith Kumar Sports Services LLC.

That makes two producer credits for Shalini in the space of about a day. On Monday evening she was announced as the producer of Dare Devil, Ajith’s 64th film with Adhik Ravichandran, under a brand new banner called BraveHearts Production. On Tuesday her name is on the racing documentary under a second banner. The family has stopped waiting for outside money on either side of Ajith’s working life, and is now bankrolling the acting career and the racing career from two separate houses it controls.

Gladiators itself has been quiet since the title promo in May. It was originally built for a May 1 theatrical release timed to Ajith’s birthday, that date came and went, and no replacement window has been named yet. The poster is the first movement in three months: four helmeted drivers stacked into a single frame under storm-lit sky, the tagline In Pursuit of Challenges carried over from the promo, and no date anywhere on it.

The crew list has held steady. GV Prakash Kumar scores, which reunites him with AL Vijay after Deivathirumagal and Madrasapattinam and follows his work on Good Bad Ugly last year. Anthony edits. Ribhu Sarma and Kabilan Vinayic are on camera, with Noel Kemman handling video, and Madhan Karky is credited on the announcement alongside Suresh Chandra and sound man Rajakrishnan MR.

What the film is documenting is a genuinely unusual second act: a 55-year-old actor running endurance races with Ajith Kumar Racing alongside former Formula 1 driver Narain Karthikeyan, through the 24H Series and Le Mans-series machinery, including the P2 in GT3 Pro-Am at Spa in April. AL Vijay has said the point is partly to drag motorsport in India out of its rich-man’s-hobby bracket. Getting the documentary in front of an audience would help. That still needs a release date.
