Kaalidas 2: Only South Indian Film at Shanghai Fest

One of seven Indian titles at the 28th Shanghai festival, Kaalidas 2 was the lone entry from the south, sharing the slate with Chandu Champion and Umrao Jaan.

Seven Indian films made the cut at this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival. Only one of them came from the south, and it was not the title most people would have guessed. Kaalidas 2, Sri Senthil’s investigative thriller with Bharath back as the inspector, was picked for the 28th edition of the festival, held across theatres in the Chinese city from June 12 to 21 with special screenings running through June 28.

That the lone southern entry was a mid-budget crime story rather than a marquee release is the interesting part. The Indian selection this year leaned on bigger, more visible names: Chandu Champion, a fresh Umrao Jaan, and Hunter’s Moon among them. Sitting on that list is a film that opened in April, built its reputation on word of mouth, and had no festival campaign of the kind those larger titles arrive with.

Sri Senthil, who wrote and directed both films in the Kaalidas series, has been open about choosing content over scale. After the 2019 original revived interest in the character, he turned down bigger offers to make a sequel he could stand behind, and the shoot ran through the nights to get there. Shanghai is the first international marker that the bet travelled.

The cast has Ajay Karthi in a key role and Sangeeta, Bhavani Sre, and Abarnathi in the central parts. Sam CS scored the film, Suresh Bala handled cinematography, Bhuvan Srinivasan cut it, and Aravind Anand wrote additional screenplay. Five Star Senthil and Dr. N. Yogeswaran produced it under the Sky Pictures banner, the distributor’s move into full production.

A festival slot does not change a film’s box office, and Kaalidas 2 has already had its theatrical run. What the selection does is put a Tamil investigative thriller in front of programmers, buyers and critics at the biggest festival in Asia, on the same page as films that cost many times more. For a story that started as a small sequel made on conviction, that is the return.
