Cake, claps and a crowded table: a month after the pooja, the Maakaali unit already has one schedule in the bag.

Maakaali, the Ameer-led drama presented by Mari Selvaraj, has wrapped its first schedule, barely a month after the film was announced. The shoot, spread across Vellore and Ranipet, finished ahead of the days the team had set aside for it, and work on the next leg is already underway.

The film is written and directed by SB Aravinth, Mari Selvaraj’s associate director, who makes his debut with it. Ameer plays the lead, a year after he turned up in Mari’s Bison Kaalamaadan as the leader of one of the film’s warring factions. The team describes Maakaali as a film that takes on a pressing social issue head-on while digging into family ties and the emotional strain inside them. The first-look poster, released at the start of September, put Ameer alone atop a giant animal skeleton.

Swasika, Anishma Anilkumar, Hariharan, Ashwin Ram and filmmaker Lenin Bharathi round out the cast. Pradeepan Selvarathinam is behind the camera, Selva RK edits and Justin Prabhakaran composes the music. Ramu Thangaraj is the art director and Dhilip Subbarayan choreographs the action.

K Karunamoorthy of Ayngaran International is producing alongside Divya Mari Selvaraj and Mari Selvaraj of Navvi Studios. With the Vellore and Ranipet portions done, the unit is now preparing for its second schedule.
