The upcoming film Padaiyaanda Maaveera is being presented as a biographical corrective, with its makers stating their intent is to challenge and reshape the widely held public perception of its subject, the late politician ‘Kaaduvetti’ Guru. The film, directed by and starring V. Gowthaman, is scheduled for a worldwide release on September 19.

The central theme of correcting a historical narrative was a focal point of a recent gathering for the film. Producer Suresh Kamatchi, a guest at the event, admitted that his own understanding of Guru was shaped by a negative public image. “I had observed him as a caste leader,” Kamatchi stated, referencing viral videos. However, after reading the script and speaking with friends, he said he was “surprised by the true history” and realized that Guru’s public image had been “built differently here.” He concluded, “This film is not a caste film. It is the life story of Kaaduvetti Guru.”

This sentiment was elaborated upon by the film’s dialogue writer, Balamurali Varma, who argued that Guru’s activism and integrity have been deliberately obscured. He cited Guru’s successful opposition to the Neyveli Lignite Corporation’s expansion plans in Jayankondam, his protests on behalf of farmers, and his efforts against caste discrimination, including abolishing the “two-tumbler system” and leading oppressed communities into temples. “This face of Kaaduvetti Guru, who lived for the people, has been hidden,” Varma asserted.

Director V. Gowthaman, who shared a personal connection with Guru, also spoke of “hidden forces” attempting to undermine the film. He framed the project as a necessary telling of the story of a “righteous” leader who could not be bought.

Filmmaker Thangar Bachan, another guest, argued against labeling a film about a local leader as a “caste film.” Poet and lyricist Vairamuthu suggested the film’s strength lies in its foundation in real life. “Padaiyaanda Maaveera is a story of a real fighter’s struggle—with blood, tears, and sweat. The truth in it is not only the film’s strength but also the key to its success,” he remarked.

Padaiyaanda Maaveera is produced by VK Productions and features a cast that includes Samuthirakani, Poojitha Ponnada, and Ilavarasu, with music by G.V. Prakash Kumar and Sam C.S.
