Pyaar Prema Kalyanam trailer: the groom moves in with the in-laws

The groom packs his bags and moves into his wife’s house. That is the premise Elan has built Pyaar Prema Kalyanam around, and he has cast himself as that groom. The director of Pyaar Prema Kaadhal and Star steps in front of the camera for the first time, playing a husband who settles into his in-laws’ home because his wife, an influencer played by Saanve Megghana, refuses to leave the house she grew up in. The film skips theatres entirely and premieres on Netflix worldwide on August 21.

The trailer launch turned into a gentle roast of the new leading man, and Vetrimaaran delivered the best of it. After noting that moving from one side of the camera to the other takes real courage, he dug up an old grievance. “I am quite shy by nature. On Star he told me it was just two shots and made me act. I was angry with him for that. Now he has become an actor himself,” he said, laughing, before adding that the trailer’s few minutes had already made the room laugh several times and that the film promises both fun and something personal underneath.

For Radhika Sarathkumar, the date is the gift. The film drops on her birthday, and she made no attempt to hide her delight about it. She was also careful to set expectations: this is not, in her telling, a standard family entertainer. “It is a different love story. It looks at how everyone’s mindset and outlook on life has changed, and how we understand and accept the way today’s youngsters see love, marriage and life. We have handled many things in it very honestly,” she said.

Saanve Megghana, who dubbed for herself in Tamil, spent her time on stage marvelling at her director-hero’s gear changes. Before an emotional scene early in the shoot, she found him visibly tense. “He told me, I am trying to change my face into the actor’s, but what is running in my head is the next scene I have to film,” she recalled. “After that he never mentioned it again. Watching him move between the two states so easily taught me more than anything else on this film.”

Yuvan Shankar Raja, who also scored Elan’s Pyaar Prema Kaadhal, pointed out a small tradition the two of them have made their own: announcing the full tracklist upfront instead of trickling out two or three singles. He has seen the finished film and is backing it without hedging. “It is a proper entertainer, the kind you watch with family. I think it will be the film that keeps coming back on people’s playlists,” he said. Atrocity, the first single, has already picked up steam, and Elan calls it his favourite of the album for how differently it was built.

Yogi Babu’s presence in the cast is a promise kept. “From Star onwards he kept telling me, sir, we will definitely do a film together. He has honoured that word,” the actor said, before letting slip that the two already have another project brewing, built around a concept involving WhatsApp and YouTube.

The ensemble runs deep: Radhika Sarathkumar, Yogi Babu, M.S. Bhaskar, Geetha Kailasam, Elango Kumaravel, Senthil and Maran fill out the household. Elango Kumaravel promised that his father-in-law character will have audiences wishing for one like him at home, and Senthil reached for the highest compliment available in this genre, saying Elan’s writer-director-hero act reminded him of the films K. Bhagyaraj built around himself.

Elan, for his part, kept his own pitch short, thanking the veterans who trusted a first-time hero and refusing to explain the film beyond its logline. Rise East Entertainment has produced. Pyaar Prema Kalyanam starts streaming on Netflix on August 21.
