The trailer for Sorgavaasal, starring RJ Balaji in a dramatic departure from his comedic roles, was unveiled at a Chennai event by director Lokesh Kanagaraj and music composer Anirudh. The prison drama, directed by debutant Siddharth Viswanath, is set for theatrical release on January 29.

The film features an ensemble cast including director Selvaraghavan, cinematographer-turned-actor Natraj, and actress Saniya Ayyappan. Based on true events, the narrative explores life within prison walls, with particular focus on undertrials who comprise over 70 percent of India’s prison population.

“After reading the entire script, I kept asking the director if he wrote it himself,” said Selvaraghavan, who plays a significant role in the film. “It would be a bit of an exaggeration for me to say this now, but after the film is released, you will agree that it is extraordinary.”

Director Viswanath revealed that the team conducted extensive research, including visits to Rajahmundry prison. “When we spoke to the prisoners, the only thing they had was hope. They are hopeful that one day this gate of heaven will open and they will be able to go home and live with their families. That theme has been included in this film,” he said.

The film, produced by Swipe Right Studios and Think Studios, will be distributed worldwide by Dream Warrior Pictures. Netflix has secured the streaming rights for the thriller, which runs for two hours and ten minutes.

RJ Balaji, known for his comedic performances, emphasized the film’s quality: “Everyone who has seen it is praising it. The teaser was well received, and I’m confident the film will connect with audiences.”
