Pugazh and Sendrayan front Universe Star Studios' first film

Universe Star Studios picked a confident way to announce itself. The new banner launched its first production with a pooja in Chennai on Tuesday, and the cast list reads like someone raided Tamil comedy’s most dependable bench: Pugazh, who has been steadily building a leading-man run of his own with 4 Idiots and Oorukku Rendu Oodhari, joins Sendrayan and Pavel Navageethan at the head of an ensemble that also brings in Muthukumar, Ramar, Sarath and Ajay Raj. The film, going by Production No 1 for now, is a dark comedy, and that genre choice suddenly makes the lineup look less like a gathering and more like a plan.

Steering it all is Madhan Durai, who makes his directorial debut here after a long apprenticeship in exactly the register this film needs. He wrote for Vijay TV’s Adhu Idhu Edhu and Kalakka Povathu Yaaru, two shows that ran on timing and improvisation, and later worked as a co-director on Sixer and Sattam En Kaiyil. A comedy writer who has spent years feeding lines to performers now gets a full feature, and a cast built to deliver them.

The technical crew is a seasoned one for a first-time banner. P. G. Muthiah handles cinematography, M. S. Jones Rupert composes the music, Dinesh Kumar is the art director, Ganesh choreographs the stunts, and Ra. Kumaresan manages the production.

RSSS Pictures founder S. Thanigaivel and social activist Mathichiyam A. Karthik attended the pooja as special guests and formally launched the film, with friends from the industry and the press wishing the team on.

The shoot begins in September, and the studio says the title and further announcements will follow soon after. For a debut production, the pieces are already in place: a genre with bite, a director trained in the comedy trenches, and a cast that knows exactly where the laughs live.
