Indian cinema has had its share of film dynasties, but it has never had this. In 2026, the two highest-grossing films of the year belong to a father and his son, and not by coincidence of release dates but by sheer pull at the box office. Chiranjeevi sits at number two. Ram Charan sits at number one. No family in the history of the industry has occupied both of the year’s top spots at the same time.

Chiranjeevi set the bar first. Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu crossed 300 crore worldwide and, for a stretch, stood as the highest-grossing South Indian film of the year. That is the kind of number most stars build a career peak around, and at his stage it was a statement in itself. Then his son went and beat it.

Ram Charan’s Peddi, directed by Buchi Babu Sana, overtook the final worldwide total of his father’s film and took over as the South box-office champion of 2026, now moving towards the 400 crore mark. Peddi in particular arrived as relief, a film big enough to refill houses and steady the people who depend on full theatres to make their margins. A record on a chart is one thing; a record that puts money back into a nervous distribution chain is another, and this one did both.

For the Mega family, 2026 is now a year with its own entry in the history books, the father setting a benchmark and the son clearing it, back to back. Charts move and someone eventually climbs higher, but a father and son owning the top two places at once is the kind of line that tends to stay put for a long while.
