Peddi becomes Hombale Films' first overseas distribution title
The KGF and Kantara producer is no longer just making films; with Ram Charan's Peddi it is testing itself as an overseas distributor for the first time.
Hombale Films, the Bengaluru producer that pushed Kannada cinema into the pan-India bracket with KGF, Kantara and Salaar, is opening a second line of business. With Peddi, the Ram Charan vehicle directed by Buchi Babu Sana, it is moving into overseas distribution for the first time. Hombale is not producing the film. Peddi is a Vriddhi Cinemas, Mythri Movie Makers and Sukumar Writings production. What Hombale has acquired is the right to release it across international territories, making this the banner’s first official overseas distribution title.
The play makes sense for a producer that has spent the last five years building a global audience around its own films. Each of its three breakouts opened in dubbed versions across multiple language markets, and the company has long had to negotiate overseas releases as part of producing. Doing it for a film someone else made shifts the work from a once-a-project necessity into a recurring revenue line. The KGF franchise alone gave Hombale relationships with international cinema chains that most Telugu producers would have to start from scratch on.
Peddi is the right pilot. Ram Charan is one of the few Telugu stars whose openings draw hard from the diaspora before the film has been seen, and the poster carries A.R. Rahman as composer, giving the soundtrack overseas pull on its own. Buchi Babu Sana’s previous directorial Uppena travelled well in international territories, which gives the new film a reference point to plan on.
The film is now scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on June 4. That is a further shift from the April 30 date the producers had been holding earlier this year, itself a move from a March 27 slot. International territory plans have not been broken out yet, but the trade is reading the Hombale move as a signal that the banner’s next two years will be at least as much about distribution as production.
