Dorothy teaser: Keerthy Suresh anchors Karthik Subbaraj's tenth

A day after Karthik Subbaraj revealed Dorothy as the title of his tenth film, Dhanush unveiled its teaser, and the minute and a half tells you the director is in a different register this time. Dust rolls across a wide village road, goats bleat somewhere off frame, and a period-set world assembles itself around three people whose lives are clearly knotted together. Two of them are Karthi and Subbu, friends drifting through life as troublemakers, played by Sananth and Rishikanth. The third is the woman both of them fawn over, and the film carries her name: Dorothy, played by Keerthy Suresh.

The teaser withholds the actual story and offers a mood instead, a mystery gathering around Keerthy’s character while a conflict brews between the friends. Keerthy’s own framing sharpened the stakes: “Some journeys begin long before the road. Some calls can never be undone. And some bonds are tested by a world determined to tear them apart. This is not just a story of friendship. It’s a story of everything that stands in its way.”

Dorothy arrives with an unusual pedigree for a Tamil village drama. Ilaiyaraaja scores it, and the film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before opening in theatres worldwide on September 25, the festival selection Dhanush called a monumental achievement for Tamil cinema in his launch post. As reported earlier, Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment backs the film alongside Karthik Subbaraj’s own Dhammam Films and Jio Studios.

For Karthik Subbaraj, this is a sharp turn after the star-scale swagger of Retro: a woman-fronted period mystery with an 83-year-old maestro doing the music, timed for a festival bow before it meets regular audiences. S. Thirunavukkarrasu shoots it, Ganesh Siva edits, Kumar Gangappan designs the production and Dinesh Subbarayan choreographs the action. Seven weeks to the premiere, and the director’s most closely guarded story yet stays guarded.
