Double Occupancy, the fantasy romance that hands debutant Aswin Kandasamy his first feature, has its cast and crew kicking off promotions in Chennai ahead of release. Produced by Khushbu Sundar’s Avni Movies alongside ACS Arun Kumar’s Benzz Media, it puts Santhosh and Samyuktha Viswanathan at the centre of the story, with music by Sam C.S.

The hook sits in the title. A supernatural event early on splits one body into two separate lives, a man and a woman, each living their own life and each in a relationship, with neither partner aware the two share a single body. Kandasamy pitches it as bold, with adult shades, but resists the adult-film tag, saying there is as much love, comedy and action in it. Once the audience buys the fantasy in the opening minutes, he says, the rest plays out as a grounded story about two couples and one secret. The one-liner came from a friend who owed him money and joked about whether paying it back would turn him into a woman.

For Santhosh, who appeared in Ponniyin Selvan, the role is a sharp turn from that debut. He plays a bartender, took classes to get the moves right, and spends stretches of the film in a woman’s costume while holding a masculine bearing, shifting from comedy to an action beat inside a single scene. Reshma Venkatesh, who built a following as a dancer, makes her acting debut here in a layered part she says she pushed to land. The ensemble also carries Vinoth Kishan, Bhagavathi Perumal and VTV Ganesh, the last cast against his usual loud comic type.

The creative producer is Anandita Sundar, daughter of Khushbu and Sundar C, who runs the side of Avni Movies that her father does not direct. She locked the film the moment Kandasamy narrated it, and says her parents handed her the final say and the room to trust her own instinct, promising to stand behind whatever she believed in. She credits her time with Mani Ratnam for teaching her to grow an idea rather than overrule it. Kandasamy came up the same production side of the business, close to a decade as a line producer and executive producer, including on Gautham Vasudev Menon’s films, before stepping out to direct. Santhakumar Chakravarthy shot the film and Praveen Antony edited.

Sam C.S, better known lately for action scores, has already released the singles, the love track Minnal Adikkiri and the promo theme Nagarjunava, with the rest of the music and the film’s heavy VFX load in their final stretch. Shot over a fifty-day Chennai schedule, Double Occupancy is aiming for theatres in the first week of June.
