Dulquer's I'm Game skips Onam, lands September 3

I’m Game has blinked first in the Onam race. Dulquer Salmaan’s fantasy thriller, which was set to open August 20 alongside the festival crowd, will now release in theatres worldwide on September 3. The official line is that the two extra weeks buy a wider rollout: more screens, more international markets, and a simultaneous release in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada.

Read between the lines and it is a confidence play as much as a scheduling one. Wayfarer Films is coming off the blockbuster run of Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, and rather than fight for Onam-week showcases, it is giving its biggest production yet a clean corridor of its own. Dulquer, who produces alongside Jom Varghese, says the film deserves a release that matches its canvas, and the pan-India plumbing is being laid to match.

The film itself has been billed as a stylish fantasy thriller of a kind Malayalam cinema has not attempted before, with Dulquer in a decidedly mass avatar. It marks his 40th film, shot across more than 100 locations in South India, and it is director Nahas Hidhayath’s follow-up to RDX, which means expectations on the action front are not modest. Anbariv are choreographing the set pieces, Jakes Bejoy is scoring, and the trailer that dropped in five languages has already done its job of stirring the pot. The whiplash is real: the first single Arugey Arugey arrived only a day ago, still pointing at August 20.

The ensemble is a curious mix that spans industries: Antony Varghese, Kayadu Lohar, Kathir, Parth Tiwari, Samyuktha Viswanathan, and the Tamil filmmaker Mysskin in front of the camera for a change. Jimshi Khalid shoots, Chaman Chacko edits.
